Preventing Sugarcane Red Rot, Smut, and Root Rot with Bacillus subtilis

Sugarcane farming faces recurring losses due to set-borne and soil-borne fungal diseases, most prominently Red Rot (Colletotrichum falcatum), Whip Smut (Sporisorium scitamineum), and pineapple disease/sett rot (Ceratocystis paradoxa). Pre-planting treatment of sugarcane setts and direct soil application with Bacillus subtilis establish a defensive microbial barrier over cut ends and emerging root buds. The bacteria rapidly multiply in the rhizosphere, secreting bio-active cyclic lipopeptides that inhibit fungal spore germination and hyphal penetration in soil and plant tissues.

In addition to disease suppression, Bacillus subtilis acts as a robust plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in ratoon and plant cane crops. It solubilizes fixed soil phosphates, synthesizes natural plant growth signals (auxins), and improves micronutrient mobility. This promotes rapid, uniform sett germination, increases shoot tillering, and supports thick stalk development. Regular soil drenching or fertigation maintains a healthy soil biome across multiple ratoon cycles, improving root longevity, nutrient use efficiency, and total sucrose accumulation at harvest.

Importance of Bacillus subtilis in Sugarcane Cultivation

Sugarcane develops an extensive root system that must remain healthy throughout the crop cycle. When soil-borne pathogens damage roots, water and nutrient absorption decline, resulting in poor tillering, thinner canes, lower cane weight, and reduced sugar recovery.

Bacillus subtilis establishes beneficial microbial populations around roots and underground buds. It competes with pathogens for nutrients and space while producing natural antimicrobial compounds that suppress disease-causing microorganisms. Healthy roots improve nutrient uptake, stimulate shoot growth, and promote vigorous cane development.

The result is stronger crop establishment, improved ratoon performance, better cane girth, and increased sugar yield.
