Preventing Maize Stalk Rot, Charcoal Rot, and Root Decay with Bacillus subtilis

Maize (corn) crops frequently encounter destructive soil-borne and stalk-infecting fungi, notably Fusarium stalk rot (Fusarium verticillioides), charcoal rot (Macrophomina phaseolina), and Pythium seedling blight. Applying Bacillus subtilis as a seed treatment or furrow drench establishes a protective microbial population along the primary taproot, crown roots, and prop roots. The bacteria form a durable biofilm that blocks fungal hyphae from entering root channels and vascular systems, while producing antifungal lipopeptides (iturins, fengycins) that suppress soil pathogen reservoirs.

In addition to disease management, Bacillus subtilis acts as a valuable plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in field corn, sweet corn, and silage maize. It solubilizes insoluble soil phosphorus and synthesizes organic acids and siderophores, improving trace element absorption. Stronger root growth improves plant stability against wind lodging and optimizes water uptake during crucial tassel emergence and grain filling windows. Regular application ensures healthy stalk integrity, uniform cob filling, and reduced mycotoxin contamination in harvested grain.

Importance of Bacillus subtilis in Maize Cultivation

Maize has a vigorous root system that requires biologically active soil for efficient uptake of water and nutrients. Damage caused by soil-borne pathogens during early growth reduces plant vigor, delays development, and affects cob formation.

Bacillus subtilis rapidly colonizes the maize rhizosphere, competing with disease-causing organisms for nutrients and space. It also produces antimicrobial metabolites and forms protective biofilms around roots, reducing pathogen establishment while promoting beneficial microbial activity.

Healthy roots support better vegetative growth, stronger stems, improved cob development, and higher grain yield.
