Papaya orchards face severe threats from root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) and reniform nematodes (Rotylenchulus reniformis). These pests attack the delicate lateral roots, causing extensive galls and root destruction. Infected trees exhibit pale foliage, severe nutrient deficiencies (particularly nitrogen and iron), early leaf drop, reduced fruit set, and small, unmarketable papayas. Heavy infestations significantly reduce the economic lifespan of the orchard.
Papaya is a fast-growing, heavy-bearing fruit crop with a soft, succulent root system that is readily attacked by soil nematodes. Reniform nematodes attach in large numbers to young roots, while root-knot nematodes cause distinct swellings and galls across the root network. Above-ground symptoms include lower leaf yellowing, petiole drooping (resembling drought stress), reduced tree height, thin trunk girth, and poor fruit elongation. Affected trees often drop flowers and young fruits, while remaining fruits stay small, lack sweetness, and ripen prematurely. Integrated management requires treating nursery polybags with bio-agents, incorporating neem cake and organic compost into pit planting mixtures, and executing regular drip drenching with Purpureocillium lilacinum and Bacillus subtilis to protect root health.
