Arecanut is a major cash crop in Kozhikode’s midland areas. But mealybugs, thrips, and scale insects cause serious damage. Mealybugs colonise the root zone, trunk, and leaf axils, sucking sap and secreting honeydew that leads to sooty mould. Thrips feed on tender leaves and developing nuts, causing scarring. Scale insects attach to the trunk and fronds, forming hard protective shells.

How to apply Verticillium on arecanut:

Soil application (for root‑zone mealybugs and scale insects):

• Take 200‑250g of Bactostore’s Verticillium powder per adult palm

• Mix with 20‑25 kg of well‑decomposed FYM or cow dung

• Apply in the basin around the palm (15‑20 cm from the trunk)

• Cover lightly with soil

• Apply twice a year – pre‑monsoon (April‑May) and post‑monsoon (September‑October)

Foliar spray (for thrips, mealybugs, and scale on fronds):

• For liquid: Mix 2‑5 ml in 1 litre of water

• For powder: Mix 5‑10g in 1 litre of water, add 2 kg jaggery per acre, let sit overnight

• Spray thoroughly on both sides of fronds, paying attention to leaf axils and the trunk

• Spray in early morning or late evening

• Repeat every 15‑20 days during active infestation

For young palms (below 5 years):

• Use half the dose – 100‑125g powder per palm
