Beauveria bassiana for Cardamom – Control Stem Borer, Thrips & Panicle Borer

Your cardamom clumps are the backbone of Idukki’s economy. But every season, borers and thrips cause serious damage. The cardamom stem borer (Conogethes punctifieralis) – also called capsule borer or panicle borer – is the most destructive pest. The larvae bore into pseudostems, causing “dead heart” – the central shoot withers and dies, and the entire clump may collapse. When panicles and capsules are attacked, developing capsules drop prematurely, causing yield loss of up to 50%. Adult moths lay eggs on panicles and capsules. Thrips scratch the surface of developing capsules, causing chaffy, underdeveloped, low‑quality capsules.

Chemical pesticides give temporary relief but come with serious downsides. They kill bees and other pollinators – cardamom depends on bees for pollination. They leave residues that can get your export shipment rejected – international buyers now test for over 400 chemicals. And borers are often inside stems or capsules, where chemicals cannot reach.

Beauveria bassiana is the KVK‑recommended natural solution.

KVK Idukki, in collaboration with ICAR‑NBAIR and the Indian Cardamom Research Institute, has conducted extensive field trials using Beauveria bassiana for cardamom borer management. The recommended dosage is 5g of Beauveria powder per litre of water applied at the 3rd and 4th instar larvae and adult stage. The technology has been promoted since 2015‑16. Over 1,260 farmers have benefited, and the area under bio‑intensive borer management has increased significantly – in Udumbanchola alone, from 8 hectares to 125 hectares. Productivity has increased from 4.49 quintals per hectare to 4.81 quintals per hectare.

How Beauveria bassiana works against cardamom borers:

When you spray Beauveria on your cardamom clumps, the fungal spores land on borer larvae and adult moths. The spores germinate, penetrate the cuticle, and grow inside the insect’s body. The fungus produces a toxin called beauvericin that weakens the insect’s immune system. The insect dies within 3‑7 days. After death, white fuzzy mold emerges from the insect’s body, producing new spores that can infect nearby borers. Importantly, Beauveria spores can persist in the cardamom plantation, providing long‑term suppression.

How Beauveria bassiana works against thrips on cardamom:

Thrips are tiny, fast‑moving insects that are difficult to control with chemicals because they hide inside unopened leaves and capsules. Beauveria spores are microscopic and can reach thrips even in hidden locations. The fungus infects thrips through direct contact, causing death within 3‑5 days. Regular applications every 10‑15 days effectively suppress thrips populations.

How to apply Beauveria bassiana on cardamom (Bactostore method):

Foliar spray for borer and thrips control:

  • For liquid formulation: Mix 2‑5 ml of Bactostore’s Beauveria bassiana liquid in 1 litre of water. For 1 acre, use 1‑2 litres of liquid diluted in 200‑400 litres of water.

  • For powder formulation: Mix 5g (one teaspoon) of Bactostore’s Beauveria powder in 1 litre of water. For 1 acre, use 1‑2 kg of powder diluted in 200‑400 litres of water.

  • For better results, add 2 kg jaggery (gur) to the mixture and let it sit overnight – the sugar feeds the fungus, boosting spore germination.

  • Spray thoroughly on all parts of the cardamom clump – stems, leaves, panicles, and capsules. Pay special attention to the base of pseudostems where borer larvae enter.

  • Spray in early morning or late evening when humidity is high.

  • Repeat every 10‑15 days during the active borer season (usually after monsoon).

Soil application (for borer pupae that overwinter in soil and leaf litter):

  • Mix 1‑2 litres of liquid or 1‑2 kg of powder with 200 kg well‑decomposed FYM.

  • Apply in the basin of each cardamom clump before monsoon.

Important tips for cardamom farmers:

  • Apply in early morning or late evening – UV rays kill fungal spores

  • Maintain high humidity – Beauveria works best in Idukki’s moist conditions

  • Do not mix with chemical fungicides – they will kill the beneficial fungus

  • Wait 7‑10 days after chemical pesticide use before applying Beauveria

  • For severe borer infestations, combine with pheromone traps or release of parasitoids like Apanteles sp. (as recommended by KVK)
