Trichoderma for Potato: Natural Biofungicide for Black Scurf, Stem Canker Control & Higher Tuber Yield

Trichoderma for Potato: Natural Biofungicide for Black Scurf, Stem Canker Control & Higher Tuber Yield

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is one of the world's most important vegetable and food crops cultivated for fresh consumption, processing, chips, French fries, starch production, seed potatoes, and export. High-yield potato production depends on healthy seed tubers, vigorous root systems, balanced nutrient uptake, and uniform tuber formation. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as black scurf, stem canker, seed tuber rot, root rot, Fusarium dry rot, and damping-off are among the major causes of poor crop establishment, reduced tuber size, and lower marketable yield.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects potato seed tubers and roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy crop growth throughout the season.

Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, offering long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable potato cultivation.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Potato

  • Promotes rapid sprouting and vigorous root development.
  • Suppresses black scurf and stem canker pathogens.
  • Improves seed tuber establishment.
  • Enhances nutrient and water uptake.
  • Encourages healthy stolon development.
  • Improves tuber initiation and tuber bulking.
  • Produces larger, heavier, and more uniform tubers.
  • Improves tuber skin quality and appearance.
  • Reduces tuber rotting during storage.
  • Enhances starch content and processing quality.
  • Increases tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
  • Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Supports sustainable and organic potato cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting potato, including:

  • Black Scurf (Rhizoctonia solani)
  • Stem Canker
  • Seed Tuber Rot
  • Fusarium Dry Rot
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Damping-off
  • Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)

Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Diseases such as late blight (Phytophthora infestans), early blight (Alternaria solani), bacterial wilt, and common scab require integrated disease management practices.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects potato plants through multiple biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes seed tubers and the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates feeder root formation and stolon development.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous plant growth and improved tuber production.

Recommended Application

Seed Tuber Treatment

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seed tubers for 20–30 minutes, shade dry, and plant immediately.

Soil Application

Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed thoroughly with 100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or neem cake before planting.

Furrow Application

Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into planting furrows before placing seed tubers.

Drip Irrigation

Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose during crop growth.
