Trichoderma for Coconut – Control Ganoderma Root Rot & Stem Bleeding
ಹಂಚಿ
Your coconut palms are the pride of Kannur. But Ganoderma root rot is a silent killer. The fungus attacks the roots, causing dry decay. The first visible symptom is yellowing and wilting of fronds, followed by the palm collapsing within months. Once the disease reaches the trunk (stem bleeding), recovery is very difficult. Chemical fungicides are ineffective because the fungus lives deep inside the wood.
Trichoderma is the proven organic solution. Trichoderma viride is a beneficial fungus that parasitises Ganoderma – it coils around the pathogen's hyphae, secretes cell‑wall‑degrading enzymes, and kills it. It also colonises coconut roots, competing with the pathogen and inducing systemic resistance in the palm.
How to use Trichoderma for coconut root rot prevention (KAU method):
-
Take 200‑250g of Bactostore's Trichoderma powder per palm (for adult palms)
-
Mix with 20‑25 kg of well‑decomposed FYM or neem cake
-
Apply in a 1.5‑2 metre basin around the palm, 15‑20 cm deep, and cover with soil
-
Apply twice a year – pre‑monsoon (April‑May) and post‑monsoon (September‑October)
-
For new plantings, mix 50g of Trichoderma powder with 5 kg FYM in each pit
For active stem bleeding (emergency treatment):
-
Make a slurry of 100g Trichoderma powder in 500 ml of water
-
Scrape the bleeding area to remove loose material
-
Apply the slurry directly on the affected trunk and cover with mud or straw
-
Repeat after 15 days
