Stylosanthes (Stylo) Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Fodder Yield and Sustainable Pasture Management

Stylosanthes (Stylosanthes hamata, S. scabra and S. guianensis), commonly known as Stylo, is a perennial tropical forage legume widely cultivated for grazing lands, hay production, silage and pasture improvement. It is highly valued for its drought tolerance, high protein content and excellent nitrogen-fixing ability. Integrating biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides enhances root development, nutrient availability, disease resistance and forage productivity while improving long-term soil fertility.

Healthy soil microorganisms are essential for maintaining productive Stylo pastures. Beneficial microbes colonize the rhizosphere, improving nutrient cycling, root growth and plant vigor throughout the growing season.

Rhizobium is the primary biofertilizer for Stylosanthes because it forms nitrogen-fixing nodules that naturally supply much of the crop's nitrogen requirement. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert insoluble phosphorus into plant-available forms, promoting vigorous root systems and rapid vegetative growth. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) improve potassium uptake, enhancing drought tolerance, forage quality and stand persistence. NPK Microbial Consortia provide balanced nutrient mobilization throughout crop development.

Micronutrient availability further improves productivity. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria enhance chlorophyll formation and photosynthesis. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria improve sulphur availability for protein synthesis and forage quality. Mycorrhiza (AMF) expands the effective root system, improving phosphorus uptake and water absorption. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria strengthen plant tissues and increase tolerance to heat, drought and grazing stress.

Stylosanthes is susceptible to diseases including anthracnose, leaf spot, root rot, damping-off, stem blight and collar rot. These diseases reduce forage yield, stand longevity and pasture quality.

Beneficial microorganisms naturally suppress disease-causing pathogens by maintaining a healthy rhizosphere. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum suppress soil-borne fungi while promoting healthy root growth. Pseudomonas fluorescens acts as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), reducing disease pressure and improving crop vigor. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial compounds that strengthen integrated disease management. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus further improve root protection and beneficial microbial diversity.

Major insect pests include leaf-feeding caterpillars, armyworms, aphids, grasshoppers, termites and white grubs. These pests reduce foliage production and pasture productivity.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls susceptible caterpillar pests such as armyworms and leaf feeders. Beauveria bassiana helps suppress aphids and other soft-bodied insects. Metarhizium anisopliae provides biological control of termites and white grubs. Lecanicillium lecanii supports biological management of aphids. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia help suppress plant-parasitic nematodes and maintain healthy root systems.

Applying microbial products through seed treatment and periodic soil application allows beneficial microorganisms to establish rapidly around the roots. Combined with balanced fertilization, rotational grazing and proper pasture management, biological crop management improves nutrient-use efficiency, increases forage production and supports sustainable Stylosanthes cultivation.
