Organic Vegetable Gardening – How Trichoderma Prevents Wilt, Damping Off & Root Rot

For vegetable farmers, seedling mortality from damping-off (Pythium), and adult wilt from Fusarium and Phytophthora, are major recurring problems. One morning your tomato or chilli seedlings are fine; the next day they have collapsed at the base. Later in the season, entire plants suddenly wilt and die.

Trichoderma is a powerful, organic shield for your vegetable crops.

What KAU recommends:
The KAU Agri Infotech Portal recommends seed treatment with Trichoderma at the rate of 5g/kg of seed for effective disease management. Native Trichoderma isolates from Kerala have been proven effective against Fusarium wilt in vegetables.

How to apply Trichoderma for vegetables:

1. Seed treatment (before sowing):

  • Mix 5‑10g of Bactostore’s Trichoderma powder (or 5‑10 ml liquid) with enough water to coat 1 kg of seeds.

  • Stir well, shade dry for 30 minutes, then sow.

2. Nursery bed drench (to prevent damping-off):

  • Mix 5g of powder (or 5 ml liquid) in 1 litre of water.

  • Drench the soil of the nursery bed before sowing seeds.

3. Root dip for seedlings (before transplanting):

  • Mix 10g of powder (or 10 ml liquid) in 1 litre of water.

  • Dip the roots of seedlings (tomato, chilli, brinjal, cabbage) for 10 minutes before transplanting.

4. Soil drench for established plants (every 2‑3 months):

  • Mix 100‑200g of powder (or 100‑200 ml liquid) in 10 litres of water.

  • Drench around the root zone of each plant (about 100‑200 ml per plant).

Results you can expect:

  • Healthier seedlings with almost no damping-off.

  • Strong root systems.

  • Significantly reduced wilt incidence.

  • Organic, residue‑free vegetables – better market price.
