Mosquito Dunks for Rainwater Harvesting Systems – Biological Mosquito Larvae Control Using BTI
Rainwater harvesting is an important method of conserving water for residential properties, farms, commercial buildings, resorts, landscaping projects and industrial facilities. However, poorly maintained rainwater collection systems can become mosquito breeding habitats when water remains stagnant and mosquitoes can enter.
Mosquito dunks containing Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (BTI) are biological larvicides designed to control susceptible mosquito larvae in suitable standing-water environments.
BTI-based larvicides are available in different formulations, including floating dunks, briquettes, granules, wettable powders and liquid products.
Peak Laboratories manufactures BTI-based microbial larvicide formulations, including BTI 7% WP and BTI 5% AS, for applications permitted by the relevant product registrations and labels.
1. Why Rainwater Harvesting Systems Can Become Mosquito Breeding Sites
Rainwater harvesting systems collect and store water from rooftops, gutters, drainage channels and other catchment areas.
When storage tanks, rain barrels, collection pits or cisterns are not adequately covered, adult mosquitoes may enter and lay eggs.
Mosquito larvae develop in water before emerging as flying adults. Suitable standing-water habitats may support mosquitoes such as Aedes and Culex species, depending on local environmental conditions.
Potential breeding locations include rainwater storage barrels, open collection tanks, rooftop drainage channels, stormwater sumps, unused collection pits and poorly maintained water-storage structures.
2. How BTI Mosquito Dunks Work in Rainwater
BTI is a naturally occurring bacterium that produces insecticidal proteins active against susceptible mosquito larvae.
When mosquito larvae ingest effective BTI material, the proteins act in their digestive system, damaging the gut and interrupting feeding.
Affected larvae may die before completing development into adult mosquitoes.
BTI primarily targets the larval stage. It does not directly eliminate flying adult mosquitoes or prevent mosquitoes from entering an uncovered water tank.
3. How to Use Mosquito Dunks in Rainwater Harvesting Systems
For a non-potable rainwater collection system, begin by inspecting the storage tank, collection barrel or water-holding pit for mosquito entry points and visible larvae.
Repair damaged covers and fit mosquito-proof mesh to inlets, vents and overflow pipes.
If water cannot be emptied or adequately protected, an appropriately registered BTI larvicide may be used where the product label permits that particular application.
Select the formulation according to the type of storage system, water use, surface area and manufacturer's application instructions.
Floating mosquito dunks may be suitable for some accessible standing-water containers. Liquid or wettable powder BTI products may be appropriate for other authorised mosquito-breeding habitats.
Do not assume that all BTI products are approved for drinking-water storage, agricultural irrigation water or every rainwater harvesting application. Product-specific restrictions must be checked.
4. BTI Biological Larvicides for Rainwater Storage – Peak Laboratories
Peak Laboratories manufactures microbial larvicide formulations containing Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis.
Its BTI product range includes wettable powder and liquid formulations intended for suitable mosquito-larval management applications, subject to applicable approvals and label directions.
Potential commercial enquiries may include non-potable rainwater storage systems, resort landscape water features, commercial property drainage, stagnant-water management and other authorised larval habitats.
BTI is a useful component of integrated mosquito management, but it should be combined with mosquito-proof screening, storage-system maintenance, drainage improvements and routine inspection.
