Hirsutella thompsonii: Guide for Using 1 kg Powder Against Mites
ಹಂಚಿ
What it is: A mycoparasitic fungus specifically targeting mites. It infects and kills pest mites naturally. Commercial product often called "Mycohit".
Target Pests: Effective against Eriophyid mites (gall mites, rust mites) and Tetranychid mites (spider mites). Used in citrus, coconut, grapes, vegetables.
How to Use 1 kg Powder Formulation
Preparation Steps (CRITICAL):
- Use 1% Jaggery Solution: Dissolve 10g jaggery in 1 liter of chlorine-free water. Boil, cool, then use.
- Activation: Mix required powder dose (see below) in the jaggery water. Stir well.
- Soak Time: Let mixture sit for 30 minutes to activate spores.
- Strain: Filter through muslin cloth before adding to spray tank.
Recommended Dosage & Application:
| Crop | Target Mite | Dose per Acre | Water | Critical Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coconut | Eriophyid mites (root wilt) | 100-150g | 200L | Spray entire crown, focus on undersides |
| Citrus | Citrus rust mite | 100g | 150L | Cover fruits & leaf undersides |
| Grapes | Spider mites | 80-100g | 100L | Evening spray, good coverage |
| Vegetables | Broad mites, spider mites | 50-80g | 100L | Early infestation only |
For 1 kg powder: Approximately covers 8-12 acres depending on crop.
Application Protocol
1. Timing is Everything:
o Apply at FIRST SIGNS of mite damage (stippling, yellowing, webbing).
o Spray in evening (after 4 PM) or early morning.
o Avoid spraying in hot, dry, sunny conditions.
2. Spray Method:
o Use a good quality sprayer with fine nozzle.
o Thorough coverage is essential—spray undersides of leaves where mites live.
o Add a sticker/spreader (soap nut solution or commercial sticker) for better adhesion.
3. Frequency:
o First spray: At mite detection.
o Follow-up: Repeat at 7-10 day intervals, 2-3 times.
o Preventive: Can apply at 15-day intervals in high-risk seasons.
Compatibility & Precautions
DO NOT MIX WITH:
- Chemical fungicides (especially systemic)
- Broad-spectrum pesticides
- Sulfur-based products
CAN BE COMBINED WITH:
- Neem oil (0.5%) – synergistic effect
- Other biopesticides (Beauveria bassiana) – with caution
- Stickers/spreaders (use recommended dose)
Wait Period: If using chemicals, wait at least 10 days before applying H. thompsonii.
Key Success Factors
- Humidity >80%: The fungus needs high humidity to germinate and infect. Time sprays with rainy periods or irrigate before spraying.
- Moderate Temperature: Optimal range 25-30°C. Less effective above 35°C.
- Early Application: Works best on young mite populations. Cannot control severe outbreaks alone.
- Storage: Keep unopened powder in cool, dry place (15-25°C). Once opened, use quickly or store in airtight container.
Expected Results
- First effects: Visible in 5-7 days (mites become sluggish)
- Maximum mortality: 10-15 days after application
- Residual effect: 2-3 weeks under ideal humid conditions
Note: This is a biological control – not a quick-kill chemical. It works by establishing in the mite population over time. Best used in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
For severe infestations: Consider combining with a compatible miticide first, then follow with H. thompsonii for long-term control.
