Farmyard Manure FYM Enrichment Farmer Checklist for Successful Biofertilizer Application | Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma harzianum, Bacillus subtilis, Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria, Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria, Azotobacter

Farmyard manure (FYM) is an important organic amendment used by farmers to support soil fertility, organic matter management and nutrient cycling.

FYM generally contains animal dung, urine-soaked bedding materials and other biodegradable farm residues that undergo decomposition before agricultural application.

Properly decomposed farmyard manure contributes organic matter and nutrients to soil and can support soil structure, moisture retention and microbial activity.

FYM enrichment involves introducing suitable beneficial microorganisms into manure for specific biological purposes.

Trichoderma species, selected Bacillus species and suitable decomposer microorganisms may contribute to organic matter transformation under appropriate conditions.

Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB), Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB), Azotobacter and other nutrient-related biofertilizers may be introduced into mature, cooled FYM when supported by product recommendations.

However, successful FYM enrichment requires careful attention to manure maturity, microbial selection, inoculant quality, dosage, water quality, moisture, aeration and compatibility.

Farmers should not assume that microbial inoculation can immediately convert fresh manure into a mature, safe organic amendment.

Following a practical farmer checklist helps reduce avoidable application mistakes and supports responsible biological soil fertility management.

Check FYM Maturity, Quality and Intended Enrichment Purpose

Farmers should first determine whether the objective is to support manure decomposition or introduce nutrient-related biofertilizer microorganisms into mature FYM. Fresh or actively heating manure may be unsuitable for conventional temperature-sensitive biofertilizers, while insufficiently stabilized material may create problems when applied directly around crop roots. The manure should be assessed for temperature stability, moisture, decomposition stage, contamination and suitability for agricultural application using appropriate quality indicators. Microbial enrichment should begin only when the manure condition matches the selected inoculant's intended purpose and product instructions.

Check Microbial Selection, Product Quality and Correct Dosage

Farmers should select suitable microorganisms according to their intended biological functions, such as selected Trichoderma and Bacillus strains for decomposition-related activities or PSB, KMB and Azotobacter for mature-FYM inoculation. Before application, the product should be checked for microbial identity, formulation, viable concentration, manufacturing and expiry information, storage conditions and recommended dosage. For Bactostore powder products specifically recommending 1 kg mixed into 200 litres of water, this represents a microbial suspension preparation concentration and not a universal dose for every tonne of FYM. The actual inoculant quantity should be calculated from the product-specific instructions and the amount of manure being treated.

Check Water Quality, Moisture, Aeration and Uniform Mixing

Microbial suspensions should be prepared using clean, suitable water and distributed evenly throughout the appropriate FYM material. Extreme water pH, excessive salinity, unsuitable temperature or disinfectant residues may affect sensitive microorganisms, depending on the strain and formulation. Farmers should maintain adequate manure moisture without waterlogging and ensure sufficient aeration to avoid undesirable anaerobic conditions. Uniform mixing, appropriate turning and regular observation of moisture and temperature can help maintain suitable conditions during any recommended enrichment or conditioning period.

Check Compatibility, Storage and Field Application Readiness

Trichoderma, Bacillus, PSB, KMB, Azotobacter and other beneficial microorganisms should not automatically be mixed together without verified compatibility information or manufacturer-supported instructions. Certain fungicides, bactericides, disinfectants and unsuitable microbial combinations may reduce inoculant viability, so validated consortia or appropriate separate applications should be preferred. Enriched FYM should be protected from excessive heat, drying, waterlogging and contamination while being stored or handled according to the selected product's recommendations. Before field application, farmers should confirm manure maturity, consider crop nutrient requirements and soil fertility status, and monitor soil moisture and crop response after application.
