Yellow stem borer is a major pest in Palakkad’s paddy fields. The larvae bore into the stem and feed inside, causing “dead hearts” in young plants and “white heads” at maturity. Leaf folder larvae fold leaves and feed inside, reducing photosynthesis. Chemical sprays cannot reach borers inside the stem.

Beauveria bassiana seed treatment provides endophytic protection. The fungus enters the rice seedling through the roots and colonises the stem tissue. When stem borer larvae feed on the inner stem, they ingest Beauveria spores and become infected. The fungus then grows inside the larvae, killing them before they cause significant damage.

How to apply Beauveria seed treatment for paddy (per acre):

• Take 100g of Bactostore’s Beauveria powder (or 100 ml liquid)

• Mix with enough water to coat 10 kg of paddy seeds

• Stir until all seeds are evenly coated

• Shade dry for 30 minutes, then sow immediately

• The Beauveria will colonise the growing seedlings and protect them for up to 60‑80 days.

For existing leaf folder infestation (foliar spray):

• Mix 2‑5 ml of Beauveria liquid (or 5‑10g powder) in 1 litre of water

• Spray on both sides of leaves, targeting the folded leaves where larvae hide

• Apply in early morning or late evening

• Repeat every 10‑15 days.
