Verticillium lecanii for Black Pepper – Kill Thrips, Aphids & Mealybugs

Idukki's black pepper is world‑renowned for its pungency and aroma. But this valuable crop is constantly under threat from tiny sucking pests that can destroy an entire season's earnings. Thrips are the most damaging – they rasp the surface of developing pepper berries, causing brown, corky scars. Once scarred, berries cannot be sold as whole black pepper and fetch a much lower price. Aphids cluster on tender shoots and leaves, sucking sap and transmitting viral diseases. Mealybugs hide in leaf axils, under bark, and even on roots, weakening the entire vine.

Chemical pesticides give temporary relief but come with serious downsides. They kill the natural predators that keep pest populations in check. They leave residues that can get your export shipment rejected – international buyers now test for over 400 chemicals. And pests quickly develop resistance, forcing you into an expensive chemical treadmill.

Verticillium lecanii breaks this cycle. It is a natural fungus that specifically targets soft‑bodied sucking pests. The fungal spores stick to the pest's body, germinate, and penetrate through the cuticle. Once inside, the fungus grows rapidly, consuming the pest from within and producing toxins. The pest dies within 48‑72 hours. The dead pest becomes covered with white fuzzy growth – earning Verticillium the name "white halo fungus".

How Verticillium lecanii benefits your pepper farm:

  • Controls thrips, aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, jassids, scale insects, and mites

  • Protects berry quality – no scarring, higher market price

  • Zero chemical residues – safe for export to EU, USA, and Middle East

  • Safe for pollinators – bees can safely visit pepper flowers

  • No pest resistance – fungi evolve faster than pests

  • Can be sprayed up to harvest day – no waiting period

  • Compatible with neem oil and other biopesticides

  • Can be used in organic certification programs

How to apply on black pepper (Bactostore method):

Foliar spray (for thrips, aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs on leaves and spikes):

  • For liquid formulation: Mix 2‑5 ml of Bactostore's Verticillium lecanii liquid in 1 litre of water. For 1 acre, use 1‑2 litres of liquid diluted in 200‑400 litres of water.

  • For powder formulation: Mix 1‑2 kg of Bactostore's Verticillium powder in 200‑400 litres of water. For better results, add 2 kg of jaggery (gur) and let it sit overnight – the sugar feeds the fungus, boosting spore germination and infection rate.

  • Spray thoroughly on leaves, stems, spikes, and berries. Pay special attention to the underside of leaves where pests hide.

  • Spray in early morning or late evening when humidity is high.

  • Repeat every 10‑15 days during active pest infestation.

Soil application (for mealybugs and scale insects hiding at base and on roots):

  • Mix 1‑2 litres of liquid or 1‑2 kg of powder with 200 kg well‑decomposed FYM. Apply in the basin around each pepper vine.

For young pepper vines (root dip before planting):

  • Mix 10 ml of Verticillium lecanii liquid in 1 litre of water. Dip the roots of young pepper cuttings for 10 minutes before planting. This protects young vines from soil‑borne mealybugs and scale insects.

Important tips for pepper farmers:

  • Verticillium works best in high humidity – perfect for Idukki's climate

  • Do not mix with chemical fungicides – they will kill the beneficial fungus

  • Wait 7‑10 days after chemical fungicide use before applying Verticillium

  • For best results, apply preventively before pest populations explode

  • If infestation is severe, combine with neem oil or other biopesticides (test small area first)

Real farmer feedback from Idukki:

"I was losing 30% of my pepper berries to thrips scarring. After using Bactostore Verticillium lecanii spray every 15 days, the scarring has almost disappeared. And my export sample passed the residue test." – Thankappan, Thodupuzha.
