Trichoderma for Tomato: Natural Biofungicide for Fusarium Wilt, Root Rot Control & Higher Fruit Yield

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the world's most widely cultivated vegetable crops and is highly susceptible to several destructive soil-borne fungal diseases throughout its growing season. Healthy roots are essential for vigorous vegetative growth, continuous flowering, fruit setting, and high-quality fruit production. Diseases such as Fusarium wilt, damping-off, root rot, collar rot, and southern blight can significantly reduce plant stand and yield if not effectively managed.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects tomato roots against harmful fungi while promoting stronger root development and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii establish themselves around the root system, suppress pathogenic fungi, improve nutrient availability, and enhance overall plant health.

Unlike conventional fungicides that provide only temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma forms a living protective barrier around the roots, delivering continuous biological protection while improving soil fertility and crop productivity.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Tomato

  • Improves seed germination and nursery establishment.
  • Protects seedlings from damping-off.
  • Promotes vigorous root development and root branching.
  • Suppresses Fusarium wilt and root rot pathogens.
  • Improves nutrient and water absorption.
  • Encourages rapid vegetative growth.
  • Increases flowering and flower retention.
  • Enhances fruit setting and reduces flower drop.
  • Improves fruit size, weight, and uniformity.
  • Enhances fruit firmness and shelf life.
  • Improves tolerance to drought and transplant stress.
  • Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil health.
  • Supports sustainable and organic tomato cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting tomato, including:

  • Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici)
  • Damping-off
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Southern Blight (Sclerotium rolfsii)
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Fusarium Crown Rot
  • Seedling Blight
  • Seed Rot

Note: Trichoderma primarily controls soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as early blight, late blight, and bacterial spot require integrated disease management.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects tomato plants through multiple biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that break down fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates root branching and root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These biological mechanisms provide season-long protection while supporting vigorous plant growth.

Recommended Application

Seed Treatment

Treat tomato seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.

Nursery Bed Application

Mix 1–2 kg of Trichoderma per acre nursery area with well-decomposed compost or FYM before sowing seeds.

Root Dip Before Transplanting

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting into the main field.

Soil Application

Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of farmyard manure (FYM) or compost and apply around the root zone during land preparation or after transplanting.

Drip Irrigation

Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
