Trichoderma for Mango: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Dieback Management & Higher Fruit Yield
शेयर करना
Mango (Mangifera indica), known as the King of Fruits, is one of the most commercially important fruit crops grown for domestic consumption, processing, and export. High-quality mango production depends on healthy root systems, vigorous tree growth, efficient nutrient uptake, regular flowering, strong fruit retention, and premium fruit quality. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, collar rot, damping-off (in nurseries), stem rot, and dieback can weaken trees, reduce fruit production, and shorten orchard life.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects mango roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthier tree growth throughout the season.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide temporary disease control, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population in the root zone, delivering long-term biological protection while improving soil fertility and orchard sustainability.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Mango
- Promotes vigorous root growth and feeder root development.
- Suppresses root rot, collar rot, and stem rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances tree vigor and canopy development.
- Increases flowering and panicle health.
- Improves fruit set and reduces premature fruit drop.
- Enhances fruit size, weight, colour, and uniformity.
- Improves sweetness (°Brix), pulp quality, and aroma.
- Increases tolerance to drought and heat stress.
- Improves nutrient-use efficiency.
- Enhances beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends orchard productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic mango cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting mango, including:
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Stem Rot
- Dieback (soil-related infection component)
- Damping-off (nursery plants)
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
- Nursery Seedling Root Diseases
Note: Trichoderma primarily controls soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as anthracnose, powdery mildew, bacterial canker, and sooty mould require integrated orchard management practices.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects mango trees through several biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the tree's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while improving tree growth and fruit productivity.
Recommended Application
Nursery Application
Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting seedlings or grafts.
Root Zone Soil Application
Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder per mature tree with 5–10 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or organic compost and apply uniformly around the tree's drip line. Irrigate immediately after application.
Basin Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost in circular basins around the tree during the pre-flowering stage and again after harvest.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
