Trichoderma for Grapes: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Black Foot Disease & Higher Grape Yield
शेयर करना
Grapes (Vitis vinifera) are one of the most valuable fruit crops cultivated for fresh table grapes, raisins, juice, wine production, and export. India is a major exporter of premium table grapes, making vine health and fruit quality critical for commercial success. Healthy roots and a biologically active soil are essential for vigorous vine growth, balanced canopy development, efficient nutrient uptake, high bunch weight, and superior berry quality. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, black foot disease, collar rot, and decline of grapevines can reduce vine vigor, shorten vineyard lifespan, and significantly decrease productivity.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects grapevine roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and promoting vigorous root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy vine growth throughout the season.
Unlike conventional fungicides that provide short-term disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, offering long-term biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable vineyard management.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Grapes
- Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
- Suppresses root rot and black foot disease pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances vine vigor and canopy development.
- Encourages healthy shoot growth and root regeneration.
- Improves flowering and bunch formation.
- Increases berry set and bunch weight.
- Produces larger, firmer, and more uniform berries.
- Improves berry colour, sweetness (°Brix), and shelf life.
- Enhances tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends vineyard productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic grape cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting grapevines, including:
- Root Rot
- Black Foot Disease
- Collar Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Armillaria Root Rot (suppression)
- Nursery Root Diseases
- Damping-off (nursery plants)
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Trichoderma primarily controls soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as powdery mildew, downy mildew, anthracnose, Botrytis bunch rot, and Esca complex require integrated vineyard disease management practices.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects grapevines through several biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the vine's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while improving vine health and fruit production.
Recommended Application
Nursery Application
Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting rooted cuttings or grafts.
Root Dip Before Planting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip rooted vines or grafts for 20–30 minutes before planting.
Basin Application
Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder per mature vine with 5–10 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or organic compost. Apply around the vine root zone and irrigate immediately.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100 kg of FYM or compost around the vineyard during pruning and active vegetative growth.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
