Trichoderma for Arecanut – Control Root Rot, Yellow Leaf & Nut Drop
शेयर करना
Arecanut is a major cash crop in Kannur, especially in Iritty and Taliparamba blocks. But root rot and yellow leaf disease have been causing serious losses. Yellow leaf disease starts with yellowing of fronds, followed by reduced nut size, premature nut drop, and eventual palm death. It is often aggravated by poor soil health and fungal pathogens.
Trichoderma works in multiple ways:
-
Parasitises root‑rot fungi (Phytophthora, Ganoderma, Rhizoctonia) by coiling around their hyphae and digesting them
-
Colonises the root surface, creating a protective barrier
-
Produces antibiotics that suppress fungal growth
-
Improves soil fertility by decomposing organic matter and releasing bound nutrients
How to use Trichoderma for arecanut root rot and yellow leaf:
Preventive soil application (twice a year):
-
Take 200g of Bactostore's Trichoderma powder per adult palm
-
Mix with 20‑25 kg of well‑decomposed cow dung or FYM
-
Apply in the basin (15‑20 cm from the trunk) and cover with soil
-
Apply in April‑May (pre‑monsoon) and September‑October (post‑monsoon)
For yellow leaf disease – integrated approach:
-
First, apply 200g Trichoderma powder with 25 kg FYM per palm
-
Then, after 15 days, apply NPK consortia (100‑200 ml liquid per palm diluted in 5‑10 litres water) as a soil drench
-
Also apply micronutrients (zinc, boron) if deficiency is suspected
-
Repeat every 4‑6 months
For nut drop during monsoon:
-
Mix 20g Trichoderma powder in 1 litre of water – make a suspension
-
Spray on the developing nuts and spadix once every 15 days during monsoon
-
This suppresses Phytophthora and Colletotrichum on the nut surface
