Supercharging Chilli Yields: How PSB & KMB Biofertilizers Drive Flower Retention, Fruit Length, Pungency (Capsaicin), and Color

Chilli (Capsicum annuum), or hot pepper, is an intensive, high-value solanaceous vegetable and spice crop known for its continuous flowering and multi-picking harvest schedule. Because chilli plants produce multiple flushes of flowers and pods over an extended season, a constant, highly available supply of macronutrients in the active root zone is critical.

Phosphorus (P) plays a crucial role in early seedling establishment, root branching, crown development, and profuse flower bud initiation. Potassium (K) dominates pod elongation, pericarp cell wall thickness, dry matter accumulation, capsaicin synthesis (pungency), extractable color (ASTA values in red chillies), and drought/heat stress endurance.

In heavily cultivated vegetable soils, applied phosphatic chemical fertilizers tend to bind rapidly with calcium, iron, or aluminum compounds, turning into fixed, insoluble complexes. Meanwhile, frequent irrigation can lead to potassium fixation or leaching below shallow feeder roots. Inoculating chilli beds or drip fertigation lines with Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) (Bacillus megaterium) and Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) (Frateuria aurantia) opens up these locked reserves:

  • Vigorous Rooting & Reduced Flower Drop: PSB secretes low-molecular-weight organic acids (citric, gluconic) that convert bound soil phosphates into plant-available orthophosphate, driving robust lateral root branching, sturdy main stems, and higher flower retention rates during early flush stages,

  • Increased Pod Length & Wall Thickness: KMB mobilizes trapped potassium minerals, facilitating rapid carbohydrate transport into developing pods, resulting in longer, heavier green chillies with thick pericarps that resist shipping damage,

  • Superior Pungency (Capsaicin) & ASTA Color: Readily available biological potassium stimulates key enzymatic pathways responsible for capsaicinoid synthesis (pungency) and capsanthin accumulation (deep red color in dried chillies), commanding premium market prices,

  • Stress Resistance & Continuous Harvesting: Beneficial bacterial colonization produces natural phytohormones and protective exopolysaccharides, helping chilli plants withstand temperature spikes and maintain vigor across continuous picking cycles.
