Sugarcane Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Cane Yield, Sugar Recovery and Sustainable Farming

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is one of India's most important commercial cash crops, supplying raw material for sugar, jaggery, ethanol, bioenergy and several agro-industrial products. Major sugarcane-producing states include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. Achieving high cane yields and superior sugar recovery depends on healthy root systems, vigorous tillering, efficient nutrient uptake, strong internode development and effective disease and pest management. Integrating biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides into sugarcane cultivation enhances soil fertility, improves nutrient availability and naturally suppresses diseases and insect pests while ensuring sustainable productivity.

Beneficial microorganisms establish around sugarcane roots and rhizosphere, increasing soil biological activity, improving organic matter decomposition and enhancing nutrient cycling. Healthy roots absorb nutrients more efficiently, producing vigorous tillers, thicker canes and higher biomass accumulation throughout the growing season.

Azotobacter fixes atmospheric nitrogen and continuously supplies biologically available nitrogen required for rapid vegetative growth and tiller production. Acetobacter (Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus) is especially important in sugarcane because it colonizes internal plant tissues and fixes atmospheric nitrogen within the cane, significantly improving cane growth and reducing dependence on chemical nitrogen fertilizers. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert unavailable phosphorus into plant-available forms, promoting stronger root development and better tillering. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) improve potassium availability, enhancing cane girth, internode length, juice quality, sugar accumulation and drought tolerance. NPK Microbial Consortia provide balanced nutrient mobilization throughout the crop cycle, resulting in improved cane weight and higher sugar recovery.

Micronutrient-solubilizing microorganisms further improve crop performance. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria enhance chlorophyll synthesis, enzyme activity and photosynthetic efficiency. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria improve sulphur availability for protein synthesis and metabolic activity. Mycorrhiza (AMF) expand the effective root system, improving phosphorus uptake, water-use efficiency and stress tolerance. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria increase silica uptake, strengthening stalks, reducing lodging and improving resistance to drought and diseases.

Sugarcane is affected by several economically important diseases including Red Rot, Wilt, Smut, Pokkah Boeng, Pineapple Disease, Sett Rot, Grassy Shoot Disease, Leaf Scald and Root Rot. These diseases reduce germination, tillering, cane weight and sugar recovery.

Beneficial microorganisms provide effective biological disease management. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum suppress soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium, Colletotrichum, Rhizoctonia, Pythium and Sclerotium while promoting vigorous root growth. Pseudomonas fluorescens acts as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), suppressing pathogens and inducing systemic resistance. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial compounds that inhibit fungal and bacterial pathogens. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus improve rhizosphere biodiversity and provide long-term biological disease suppression.

Major insect pests include Early Shoot Borer, Top Borer, Internode Borer, Root Borer, Pyrilla, Whitefly, Woolly Aphid, Scale Insects, Termites, White Grubs and Root-knot Nematodes. These pests reduce cane population, damage internodes and significantly decrease sugar yield.

Beauveria bassiana effectively controls borers, pyrilla, woolly aphids and other insect pests. Lecanicillium lecanii provides excellent biological control of aphids, whiteflies, scale insects and soft-bodied pests. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls shoot borers, top borers and caterpillar larvae. Metarhizium anisopliae suppresses termites, white grubs and soil-dwelling beetle larvae. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia effectively reduce root-knot nematode populations, protecting feeder roots and improving nutrient uptake.

Applying microbial products through sett treatment, furrow application, drip irrigation, compost enrichment and periodic soil drenching establishes beneficial microbial populations throughout the crop root zone. Combined with balanced nutrition, irrigation, trash mulching and proper crop management, biological crop management significantly improves nutrient-use efficiency, cane weight and sugar recovery.
