Preventing Garlic Rust, White Rot, and Basal Decay with Bacillus subtilis

Garlic (Allium sativum) production faces significant threats from soil-borne sclerotial fungi and foliar rusts, notably Garlic Rust (Puccinia allii), White Rot (Stromatinia cepivora), and Basal Rot (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae). White rot sclerotia persist in soil for decades, invading roots during cool weather and causing premature leaf yellowing and bulb decay. Treating garlic cloves prior to planting and applying Bacillus subtilis via soil drenching or drip fertigation establishes an active microbial zone around emerging roots and cloves. The bacteria secrete cyclic lipopeptides (surfactin, iturin, fengycin) that inhibit sclerotial germination, suppress fungal hyphal growth, and prevent root invasion.

Beyond disease control, Bacillus subtilis acts as a valuable plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in high-value garlic farming. It solubilizes fixed soil phosphorus, releases bound micro-nutrients via siderophore secretion, and stimulates adventitious root development. Stronger root growth supports efficient nutrient uptake during clove initiation, increases bulb firmness, and maximizes individual clove weight. Regular application ensures clean, white garlic bulbs with reduced storage rots and extended shelf life for fresh and processed markets.

Importance of Bacillus subtilis in Garlic Cultivation

Garlic requires a healthy and active root system throughout the growing season to support continuous nutrient uptake and proper bulb enlargement. Root diseases reduce water and nutrient absorption, weaken plant growth, and result in undersized bulbs with poor storage quality.

Bacillus subtilis rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere, competing with harmful fungi and bacteria for nutrients and space. It also produces antimicrobial compounds that suppress disease-causing organisms while encouraging beneficial microbial populations.

Healthy roots support vigorous leaf growth, efficient photosynthesis, better bulb development, and premium-quality garlic production.
