Desmanthus (Hedge Lucerne) Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Fodder Yield and Sustainable Pasture Production

Desmanthus (Desmanthus virgatus, D. bicornutus and related species*), commonly known as Hedge Lucerne, is a perennial tropical forage legume cultivated for grazing, hay, silage and pasture improvement. It is highly valued for its excellent drought tolerance, high crude protein content and ability to improve soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation. Integrating biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides further enhances forage production, root health and crop resilience while supporting sustainable livestock farming.

Beneficial soil microorganisms establish around the root system and improve nutrient cycling throughout the crop's productive life.

Rhizobium is the primary biofertilizer for Desmanthus because it forms nitrogen-fixing nodules that naturally supply most of the crop's nitrogen requirement. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert insoluble phosphorus into plant-available forms, encouraging vigorous root development and rapid regrowth after cutting or grazing. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) improve potassium availability, enhancing stem strength, drought tolerance and forage quality. NPK Microbial Consortia provide balanced nutrient mobilization throughout the growing season.

Micronutrients also contribute significantly to productivity. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria improve chlorophyll formation and photosynthetic efficiency. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria increase sulphur availability for protein synthesis and superior fodder quality. Mycorrhiza (AMF) expands the effective root system, improving phosphorus uptake and water absorption. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria strengthen plant tissues and improve tolerance to heat, drought and grazing stress.

Desmanthus is susceptible to diseases including leaf spot, anthracnose, root rot, collar rot, damping-off and stem blight. These diseases reduce stand density, forage quality and long-term pasture productivity.

Beneficial microorganisms naturally suppress disease-causing pathogens by maintaining a healthy rhizosphere. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum suppress soil-borne fungi while promoting healthy root growth. Pseudomonas fluorescens functions as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), reducing disease pressure and improving crop vigor. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial compounds that support integrated disease management. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus further improve root protection and beneficial microbial diversity.

Major insect pests include armyworms, leaf-feeding caterpillars, aphids, grasshoppers, termites and white grubs. These pests reduce foliage production and forage quality.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls susceptible caterpillar pests. Beauveria bassiana helps suppress aphids and other soft-bodied insects. Metarhizium anisopliae provides biological control of termites and white grubs. Lecanicillium lecanii supports biological management of aphids and thrips. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia help suppress plant-parasitic nematodes and maintain healthy root systems.

Applying microbial products through seed treatment and periodic soil application allows beneficial microorganisms to establish rapidly around the roots. Combined with balanced fertilization, rotational grazing and proper pasture management, biological crop management improves nutrient-use efficiency, increases forage production and supports sustainable Desmanthus cultivation.
