Bacillus subtilis for Rose – Biological Root Protection, Flowering & Premium Bloom Quality

Commercial rose (Rosa spp.) production under greenhouse polyhouses and open fields faces continuous pressure from aesthetic and yield-destroying fungal diseases, notably Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera pannosa), Black Spot (Diplocarpon rosae), and Botrytis Gray Mold / Petal Blight (Botrytis cinerea). Powdery mildew causes white mycelial matting on tender leaves and flower necks, distorting buds and rendering stems unmarketable. Applying Bacillus subtilis as a regular foliar spray or drip fertigation establishes an active, protective bio-barrier across leaves, stems, and flower buds. The bacteria colonize tissue surfaces, secreting cyclic lipopeptides (surfactin, iturin, fengycin) that disrupt fungal spore germination and halt hyphal expansion on delicate petals.

Beyond disease suppression, Bacillus subtilis acts as a valuable plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in floriculture. Applied around the root zone, it solubilizes fixed soil phosphorus, secretes siderophores for iron mobilization, and stimulates feeder root regeneration. Enhanced root health supports shoot vigor, improves stem length and diameter, and increases bud size. Because Bacillus subtilis leaves zero unsightly chemical residues on foliage or petals, it ensures pristine, export-grade cut roses with extended post-harvest vase life.

Importance of Bacillus subtilis in Rose Cultivation

Rose plants continuously produce flowers throughout much of the growing season. Healthy root systems are essential for sustained nutrient uptake, vigorous shoot growth, and consistent production of premium-quality blooms.

Bacillus subtilis rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere and competes with disease-causing fungi and bacteria for nutrients and space. It also produces natural antimicrobial metabolites that suppress pathogens while encouraging beneficial microbial populations.

Healthy roots support stronger canes, more flowering shoots, larger flower buds, and premium cut flower quality.
