Trichoderma for Rice (Paddy): Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Sheath Blight & Healthy Crop Growth

Trichoderma for Rice (Paddy): Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Sheath Blight & Healthy Crop Growth

Rice is one of the world's most important cereal crops and requires healthy roots throughout its growth cycle to achieve maximum tillering, strong panicle development, and high grain yield. Soil-borne fungal diseases can significantly reduce plant vigor, leading to poor establishment, nutrient deficiency, lodging, and lower productivity.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungus widely used as a biological fungicide and plant growth promoter in rice cultivation. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the root zone, suppress harmful pathogens, improve soil microbial balance, and stimulate healthy root development.

Unlike chemical fungicides, Trichoderma establishes itself around the root system and continues protecting the crop throughout the growing season while supporting sustainable agriculture.

Major Benefits of Trichoderma in Rice

  • Protects rice roots from harmful soil-borne fungi.
  • Reduces seedling mortality and damping-off.
  • Suppresses root rot and sheath blight pathogens.
  • Enhances root branching and root biomass.
  • Improves nutrient and water uptake.
  • Promotes vigorous tillering.
  • Increases chlorophyll production and plant vigor.
  • Encourages stronger stem development.
  • Improves panicle formation and grain filling.
  • Enhances beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Improves tolerance to environmental stress.
  • Supports residue decomposition and soil health.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Suitable for integrated nutrient and disease management.
  • Leaves no harmful chemical residues.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several important soil-borne diseases in rice, including:

  • Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia solani)
  • Seedling Blight
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Damping-off
  • Stem Base Rot
  • Seed-borne fungal infections
  • Nursery fungal diseases
  • Rhizoctonia infections
  • Pythium root diseases
  • Fusarium root infections
  • Sclerotium-related diseases

How Trichoderma Works

After application, Trichoderma rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere (root zone), where it:

  • Competes with pathogenic fungi for nutrients and space.
  • Produces enzymes that break down fungal cell walls.
  • Secretes antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
  • Parasitizes harmful fungi (mycoparasitism).
  • Stimulates plant defense mechanisms (induced systemic resistance).
  • Improves root architecture for better nutrient absorption.
  • Enhances beneficial microbial populations in the soil.

This multi-pronged mode of action provides long-lasting protection and improved crop performance.

Application Methods

Seed Treatment

Treat rice seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.

Nursery Application

Apply 1–2 kg per acre mixed with well-decomposed farmyard manure or compost in the nursery.

Root Dip

Prepare a slurry using 10–15 g per litre of water. Dip rice seedlings for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.

Soil Application

Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of compost or FYM and broadcast uniformly before transplanting or during field preparation.

Drip or Irrigation Application

Use compatible liquid formulations through drip systems or irrigation channels where applicable, following the manufacturer's recommended dose.
