Trichoderma for Bell Pepper (Capsicum): Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Wilt Management & Higher Fruit Yield

Trichoderma for Bell Pepper (Capsicum): Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Wilt Management & Higher Fruit Yield

Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), commonly known as Capsicum, is a high-value vegetable crop cultivated for fresh markets, greenhouse production, processing, and export. Premium yields depend on healthy root systems that support vigorous vegetative growth, continuous flowering, uniform fruit development, and high-quality harvests. However, bell pepper is highly susceptible to destructive soil-borne fungal diseases such as Fusarium wilt, damping-off, root rot, collar rot, and southern blight, particularly under intensive cultivation and protected farming conditions.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects bell pepper roots against harmful pathogens while promoting stronger root development and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy plant growth throughout the crop cycle.

Unlike chemical fungicides that provide only temporary control, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, providing long-term biological disease suppression while improving soil fertility and plant resilience.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Bell Pepper

  • Improves seed germination and nursery establishment.
  • Protects seedlings from damping-off.
  • Promotes vigorous root growth and extensive root branching.
  • Suppresses Fusarium wilt and root rot pathogens.
  • Improves nutrient and water absorption.
  • Encourages strong vegetative growth.
  • Increases flowering and flower retention.
  • Enhances fruit setting and reduces flower drop.
  • Produces larger, thicker, and more uniform fruits.
  • Improves fruit colour, firmness, and shelf life.
  • Enhances tolerance to transplant stress, drought, and heat.
  • Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Supports sustainable and organic capsicum cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several important soil-borne diseases affecting bell pepper, including:

  • Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum)
  • Damping-off
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Southern Blight (Sclerotium rolfsii)
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Fusarium Crown Rot
  • Seedling Blight
  • Seed Rot

Note: Trichoderma is primarily effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as anthracnose, Cercospora leaf spot, powdery mildew, and bacterial leaf spot should be managed through an integrated disease management program.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects bell pepper plants through several biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that break down fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These combined biological actions provide season-long protection while promoting vigorous plant growth and higher productivity.

Recommended Application

Seed Treatment

Treat bell pepper seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.

Nursery Bed Application

Mix 1–2 kg of Trichoderma per acre nursery area with well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost before sowing.

Root Dip Before Transplanting

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.

Soil Application

Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed FYM or compost and apply around the root zone during land preparation or after transplanting.

Drip Irrigation

Compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations can be applied through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
