Trichoderma for Banana – Control Fusarium Wilt (Panama Disease) & Rhizome Rot

Fusarium wilt (Panama disease) is the most feared banana disease. The fungus enters through roots, blocks the vascular system, and causes yellowing, wilting, and finally death of the plant. Once a field is infected, the pathogen stays for decades. Chemical fungicides are ineffective – they cannot reach the fungus inside the plant's water‑conducting tissues, and residues can harm the environment.

Trichoderma is the only effective organic solution. It works by:

  • Competing for space and nutrients in the rhizosphere, starving the pathogen

  • Producing cell‑wall‑degrading enzymes (chitinases, glucanases) that attack Fusarium hyphae

  • Inducing systemic resistance in banana plants, making them less susceptible

How to use Trichoderma for banana Fusarium wilt prevention:

Sucker treatment (before planting):

  • Mix 10g of Bactostore's Trichoderma powder in 1 litre of water

  • Dip the base of the banana sucker (or tissue‑culture plantlet) for 10‑15 minutes

  • Shade dry for 30 minutes before planting

  • For liquid: mix 5‑10 ml liquid in 1 litre water and dip

Soil drench after planting:

  • Mix 5‑10 ml of Trichoderma liquid (or 10g powder) in 1 litre of water per plant

  • Drench the soil around the base of the banana plant

  • Apply at planting, at 2nd month, and at 4th month

  • For best results, apply also NPK consortia (10‑20 ml liquid per plant) at the same time

For infested fields (pre‑planting soil treatment):

  • Before planting, broadcast 5‑10 kg of Trichoderma powder per acre mixed with 1‑2 tonnes of well‑decomposed FYM

  • Incorporate into the soil and irrigate lightly

  • Wait 15 days before planting

Additional tips for Kannur banana farmers:

  • Avoid planting in fields with history of wilt for 3‑5 years

  • Use resistant varieties if available

  • Remove and destroy infected plants immediately

  • Apply lime (200‑300 g per pit) before planting to raise soil pH – Fusarium prefers acidic soils

  • Combine Trichoderma with organic manures for best results
