Streptomyces Lydicus for Nematode Management in Pomegranate

Plant-parasitic nematodes, particularly root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), are a significant concern in pomegranate orchards. These microscopic soil-dwelling pests invade feeder roots, causing characteristic root galls, impaired nutrient uptake, stunted growth, yellowing foliage, poor flowering, reduced fruit size, and lower overall yields. Nematode damage also creates wounds in the root system that allow secondary fungal pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora to invade, resulting in complex disease problems that are difficult to manage.

Streptomyces Lydicus is a beneficial soil microorganism that plays an important role in Integrated Nematode Management (INM) by promoting a healthier rhizosphere and reducing the impact of nematode-associated diseases. Although Streptomyces Lydicus is primarily a biofungicide rather than a nematicide, it helps create soil conditions that support stronger roots and suppress many fungal pathogens that commonly infect nematode-damaged tissues.

Once applied to the soil, Streptomyces Lydicus rapidly colonizes the root zone and establishes a protective microbial population around feeder roots. This beneficial colonization improves root health, enhances nutrient uptake, and encourages the formation of new roots that compensate for nematode injury. Healthier roots enable pomegranate plants to tolerate moderate nematode pressure more effectively while maintaining better vegetative growth and fruit production.

One of the major advantages of using Streptomyces Lydicus in orchards affected by nematodes is its ability to reduce secondary infections. Root wounds created by nematodes often become entry points for destructive fungi responsible for wilt, root rot, and collar rot. By suppressing these soil-borne fungal pathogens, Streptomyces Lydicus helps minimize disease complexes and improves overall plant resilience.

For best results, Streptomyces Lydicus should be used as part of a comprehensive nematode management program. Combining it with registered biological nematode-control products, crop sanitation, organic matter incorporation, resistant planting material, and proper irrigation practices provides a more effective long-term strategy than relying on a single solution.

Applications through drip irrigation or soil drenching during planting, after pruning, and throughout active root growth help establish beneficial microbial populations before disease pressure increases. Repeated applications every 30–45 days maintain biological activity and continuous root protection.

Commercial pomegranate growers increasingly integrate Streptomyces Lydicus with biofertilizers, mycorrhizae, and biological nematode management products to improve soil health and orchard productivity. This sustainable approach strengthens the root system, reduces disease incidence, improves nutrient efficiency, and supports healthier, longer-living orchards.
