Metarhizium anisopliae for Groundnut Soil Pest Management in Gujarat | Biological Biopesticide Supplier India

Groundnut is an important oilseed crop cultivated across Gujarat. Because pods develop below the soil surface and the crop maintains an active underground root and pod zone, soil-associated insect pests can become an important crop-management concern in some groundnut-growing areas.

Metarhizium anisopliae is an entomopathogenic fungus used as a microbial biopesticide in integrated biological pest-management programs. It can be considered for suitable susceptible soil-dwelling insect pests and life stages according to pest identification, formulation and approved product recommendations.

How Metarhizium Works

Metarhizium contains viable fungal propagules. When suitable spores come into contact with a susceptible insect under favorable environmental conditions, they can germinate on the insect surface, penetrate the cuticle and develop within the host.

This mode of action differs from conventional chemical insecticides and means that successful biological management depends strongly on spore viability, contact with the target insect, susceptible pest stage, soil moisture, temperature and application conditions.

Soil Pest Management in Groundnut

Groundnut fields may contain different soil-associated insect pests depending on location, cropping history, season and field conditions.

Metarhizium should therefore be selected after identifying the pest and determining whether the target insect and life stage are appropriate for the microbial product being used.

For soil-associated targets, application should focus on the biologically active soil and root-zone environment where susceptible pest stages are present.

Soil Application

Depending on the formulation and label recommendations, Metarhizium may be applied through suitable soil application, root-zone application or approved irrigation methods.

Powder formulations may be incorporated with well-decomposed farmyard manure, compost or another compatible carrier where recommended. Liquid formulations provide additional options for suitable soil and root-zone applications.

Adequate soil moisture can support fungal activity and establishment. Very dry conditions can reduce biological performance, while excessive waterlogging and unfavorable soil conditions may also limit results.

Integrated Groundnut Pest Management

Metarhizium works best as one component of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. Pest monitoring, crop rotation, field sanitation, soil management, organic matter, irrigation management and other locally appropriate measures should be combined according to the identified pest problem.

A comprehensive microbial program for groundnut may separately use Rhizobium, PSB and KMB for nutrient-management objectives; Trichoderma for appropriate soil-borne disease and root-zone programs; and Metarhizium anisopliae for suitable susceptible insect pests.

Each microorganism should be selected for its intended agronomic function rather than combining multiple products without a defined target.

Peak Laboratories supplies Metarhizium anisopliae microbial biopesticide formulations in liquid and powder forms for groundnut farmers, commercial farms, FPOs, agricultural dealers, distributors, institutional buyers and bulk requirements.
